Pure Ornament 2016 – ongoing

These works are part of an ongoing study into symbols and the repetitive or meditative qualities found in mark making. Purely ornamental they depict a rich weave of complicated patterning and layering, developed over years of contemplation.

Created in one of my numerous roaming studios, mostly on archival paper but also on found substances. There is nothing to read but looking at them for weeks at a time these works contain a hypnotic effect of chequers and pulsating line work.

The added inclusion of specifically sourced imagery, usually referenced as either a Japanese sculpture of a Buddha image, a Japanese meditator or a shadow of a bowl support a loop in introspection. The strategic placement of painterly marks defines a layering of patterning that exists beyond the centrally located figures.
